Rob Gronkowski is all about a new nickname these days: Mr. Recovery.
Announcing his partnership Tuesday with Abacus Health Products, the former Patriots tight end spoke about becoming a CBD advocate and his new wellness products that will expand CBDMEDIC’s line.
“I’ve been rebuilding myself and finding a new way,” Gronkowski said during a press conference at the Andaz hotel near Bryant Park.
Reflecting on his journey thus far, the 30-year-old recalled the Patriots’ Super Bowl win over the Rams in February. After enduring a quad injury in the second quarter, Gronkowski said that he could barely walk following the game.
“I tried to go to bed, I slept for five minutes that night,” he said. “I was in tears in my bed after a Super Bowl victory. It didn’t make that much sense to me.”
Gronkowski had “one of the biggest, deepest thigh bruises,” he had ever endured, along with internal bleeding. He called it a career in March after nine NFL seasons.
“I want to be clear to my fans. I needed to recover. I was not in a good place. Football was bringing me down and I didn’t like it. I was losing that joy in life,” Gronkowski said.
Gronkowski’s sentiments mirror those of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who shockingly announced his retirement Saturday night at age 29.
“I feel for Andrew Luck, I feel for him,” he said.
Luck had dealt with injury struggles during his seven-year career in the NFL.
And while Gronkowski’s next endeavor is to “raise awareness” about CBD, football does linger in the back of his mind.
Though Gronkowski is physically equipped to be on the field, he doesn’t see a return in the foreseeable future.
“My mind, my soul keeps telling me I need more time off,” he said.
Gronkowski said he is “very satisfied” with where he is at the present moment. And he has the support of his girlfriend, Camille Kostek.
“He took on this morning press announcement with confidence, truth, grace and mixed in his one of a kind humor,” Kostek wrote on her Instagram story. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to learn and watch him evolve as he transitions to new levels mentally, physically and spiritually.”
