Reds maintain 100 per cent record despite Alisson howler

The Reds were leading 2-0 through first-half goals by Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino when Alisson tried to turn Leicester sub Kelechi Iheanacho on his own byline.

Iheanacho robbed him and square for Rachid Ghezzal to mark his Premier League debut with a goal and Leicester deserved a point on the balance of play.

But Liverpool held on to make it four wins out of four.

Mohamed Salah, after a week in the headlines for off-field reasons, should have put the visitors ahead inside four minutes.

His pass found Firmino and Kasper Schmeichel could only parry the Brazilian’s shot, but from 10 yards out Salah side-footed the ball wide.

Fortunately for him, Mane soon put the visitors in front.

Andy Robertson ran through the weak challenge of Ricardo Pereira and his cross flicked off Harry Maguire into the path of Mane, who notched his fourth goal of an impressive start to the season.

Liverpool were enjoying the bulk of possession but struggling to create clear-cut chances, with Wes Morgan making a timely block on a Gini Wijnaldum shot when they did find a way through.

Leicester’s high energy almost paid off in the 23rd minute when they won back the ball and Ghezzal played in Demarai Gray, but Alisson made a smart save.

The Foxes were the better side for the rest of the half, yet could not produce an effort on target to show for their efforts and they were punished just before the break.

Salah forced a good save from Schmeichel but moments later Firmino was allowed to head in a James Milner corner.

Leicester started the second half on top and only a brilliant block by Joe Gomez stopped James Maddison pulling one back. Then a dangerous Ghezzal cross hit Wes Morgan but rolled gently into Alisson’s arms.

But then the Brazilian goalkeeper paid the price for trying to be too clever.

Alisson had promised to keep giving LIverpool fans heart attacks after getting away with it against Brighton but this time Iheanacho made him pay and squared the ball for Ghezzal to score.

Salah’s unconvincing day ended with 20 minutes to go when he was replaced by Xherdan Shaqiri, with Naby Keita coming on for Jordan Henderson.

The changes stemmed the Leicester tide but the game remained in the balance.

In the end, Liverpool got over the line. Just.
