Real Madrid make signing new centre-back priority for next summer after failed bids for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid stars

The Champions League holders failed to land a number of defenders over the summer have no real cover for captain Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.Nacho Fernandez and Jesus Vallejo are behind them in the pecking order.

But Marca claim Madrid are convinced they need to bring in “another alternative”.

They tried to resolve their defensive woes before the transfer window closed in August.

The La Liga giants unsuccessfully attempted swoops for both Atletico's Jose Gimenez and Lucas Hernandez and Barcelona's Samuel Umtiti.

Hernandez revealed this week how he turned down the Galacticos, saying: : “I didn't pay too much attention.

“I was 100 per cent focused on my club, where I had recently signed a new contract.

“My agent told me about it. When he said there was an opportunity to go to Real Madrid, I told him I couldn't do that.
