Ralph Hasenhuettl hatches plan to stop Arsenal's lethal frontman Aubameyang

The new Southampton boss suffered at the hands of Gabon star Aubameyang in recent years.

He scored the winner for Dortmund against the Austrian’s RB Leipzig outfit two seasons ago and though Red Bull won 3-2 at BVB last term, Aubameyang hit two.

But Hasenhuettl, 51, has a strategy to nullify the Premier League’s joint top-scorer when Arsenal visit St Mary’s today.

He said: “When he has a lot of space with his pace, it’s really hard to defend. We have to work hard as a team to close this space. If we do, it will be a little bit more difficult for him.

“But he doesn’t need a lot of chances to score, as everyone knows.

“This year, with a little different shape in Arsenal’s formation, it’s a little bit easier for him.

“It will depend on how much pressure we put on the guys who want to pass to him.

“When we don’t give much time to those guys to put the perfect pass, then it is easier to defend against him.”

Hasenhuettl admits he has not been surprised by Unai Emery’s fast start, with the Gunners unbeaten in 22 games.

He said: “It wasn’t so quick because he had the whole summer to prepare his team to go in this way.”

Southampton started the weekend level on points with bottom side Fulham and, after losing his first game in charge at Cardiff last weekend, Hasenhuettl has no time to waste.

He said: “We have the busiest term in the season now, facing a lot of really hard fixtures. Besides, we have to build up our philosophy, our habits, our automatism.

“Learning by doing and learning out of the mistakes we made against Cardiff will make us better day by day.”
