Peter Wright’s wife designed his World Championship outfits despite health scare

Peter Wright admits it is a huge relief to be able to put a traumatic few weeks for his family behind him and focus on defending his World Darts Championship crown.

Wright’s wife, Jo, who designs his colourful outfits and whacky hairstyles, has been in and out of hospital recently after initially being rushed to A&E in Wolverhampton during last month’s Grand Slam of Darts.

Thankfully, a jovial Snakebite, sporting a Santa-like white beard and an elf hat, reported good news during a Zoom call with the media, including Daily Star Sport, this afternoon.

Jo is now back at home and even interjected, off camera, to joke she had designed some special outfits for the upcoming Worlds on her “death bed”.

“Jo is better, she got some good news from the surgeon yesterday (Thursday) that she’s through the worst of it and on the mend. That’s a big relief. I can get on with the darts now,” he said.

“It’s been horrible for all of us, not knowing what’s going to happen. But we’re through the worst of it. She’s on the mend and that’s the most important thing.

“I’ve been throwing on the board during the past month but I haven’t really been throwing darts, I’ve just been slinging them at the board. But tonight, and over the next few days, I’ll get myself ready. It [his game] is getting better. With the relief, I feel really good now.”

Asked if he was going to keep his festive look for the tournament, Wright said: “I’ve been growing it [the beard] but I don’t know, I might get bored and shave it off.”

On his special outfits for the tournament, without giving too much away, he confirmed: “We’ve got a couple of outfits. Jo’s designed them, not me, I’ve had nothing to with it. It should be fun.”

Wright begins the defence of the trophy on the opening night against the winner of the first round tie between Micky Mansell or Ben Rob, which kicks off the tournament on Thursday, December 15.
