Novak Djokovic beats Juan Martin del Potro in US Open final

Novak Djokovic has defeated Argentine third seed Juan Martin del Potro 6-3 7-6(4) 6-3 in the U.S. Open final.

It marks the 31-year-old’s second Grand Slam title of the season and 14th of his career.

Sixth seed Djokovic, who also triumphed at Wimbledon this year, now joins Pete Sampras in third place on the all-time list of Grand Slam titles, trailing only Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (17).

His win comes after Serena Williams was stunned by 20-year-old Naomi Osaka, who wrapped up her first ever Grand Slam success with a 6-4 second set victory to become the first Japanese woman to win a major.

During the match, the 23-time Grand Slam winner branded umpire Carlos Ramos a ‘thief’ and demanded tournament referee Brian Earley to come out during her meltdown on Arthur Ashe.

Williams initially objected to being handed a code violation for ‘coaching’ from the box and things soon escalated during her defeat at Flushing Meadows.

Williams raged: "It was not coaching. I do not cheat to win. I would rather lose. I just want you to know that.”

She continued: "I understand why you might have thought that, but I do want you to know I don’t cheat. Thank you very much.”

Williams was later fined a total of $17,000 for her three code violations.

The tennis star was docked $10,000 for "verbal abuse" of chair umpire Carlos Ramos, $4,000 for being warned for coaching and $3,000 for smashing her racquet.

The money comes out of her $1.85million prize money.
