Newcastle and Brighton pursuing Arsene Wenger favourite Denys Bain ahead of January transfer window

The Le Havre centre-back was scouted by Arsenal during the final season of Wenger’s reign at the Emirates Stadium.

Bain was seen as the next Wenger player with experience in the French lower leagues after finding Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud.

The 25-year-old had scouts heading to Ligue 2 to watch him play, with the defender’s contract expiring at the end of the campaign.

Brighton have looked at him as they attempt to get cover for Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy at the back.

And Newcastle scouts are looking at Bain as an option within their budget.

There is also interest in Germany from Schalke and Hertha Berlin, while Amiens and Nice want to keep him in France.

Le Havre are trying to tempt Bain to stay with a new contract but so far no agreement has been made.

It means they face a dilemma over whether to look to sell in January or risk losing the centre-back for nothing in the summer.

The Magpies are also believed to have joined Arsenal and Spurs in the race to sign MLS star Miguel Almiron.

It is understood Benitez is keen to bolster his creative options with his side scoring just nine goals in their opening 12 Premier League matches this season.

Daniel Campos, Almiron's agent, was at St James' Park on Saturday as the Magpies beat Bournemouth 2-1.
