Nemanja Matic reveals one thing that would make Anthony Martial a Manchester United great

Alongside Luke Shaw, the French forward has been one of the few positives at Old Trafford this season as United struggle to keep pace with Manchester City at the top of the table.

Martial, 22, joined from Monaco for an initial £36million three years ago and announced himself to the Old Trafford faithful with a memorable goal on his debut against Liverpool.

But in two full seasons under Jose Mourinho, Martial has been in and out of the starting line-up and has scored just 19 goals in all competitions.

And after being axed from the French World Cup-winning squad and a summer of bust-ups with the United boss, Martial looked to be heading for the Old Trafford exit.

However, he has returned to form scoring four goals in his last four games.

Matic claims Martial still needs to believe in himself more to make the most of his talents and become a world superstar.

He told the Independent: "Anthony is a great player and he needs to understand that. He needs more confidence.

“He is still young and I think if he continues to score in the next game he will get that.

“If he reaches his top level he can be one of the best players in the league for sure.

“Sometimes I don’t think he understands how good he is, he has everything that a Manchester United football player needs.

“Sometimes I don’t think he understands that. If I had his ability with the ball and I was as quick as him then I wouldn’t pass to anyone and I would score every game.”

Martial won a penalty and hit the decisive goal in the Everton win on Sunday and Matic reckons United’s improvements will aid the Frenchman’s development.

The Serbian added: “He does need more confidence and this comes with results.

“When you don’t have results it is very difficult for players to have that high confidence.

“The manager speaks with him about it. I have told him once. But he is a great person and a great guy and I am happy for him that he is scoring.

“It is great. The quality is there, confidence is there now and he just needs to be more consistent. I am glad we have him in the team.

“In football and in life you have difficult times and you have to get back on track and that is exactly what he is doing.”
