Neale Daniher gives stirring finals speech to Demons

Former Melbourne coach Neale Daniher has given an inspirational speech to the Demons, urging them to take their finals campaign to "another notch" against Hawthorn.

Daniher, who is fighting motor neurone disease and has raised millions of dollars for research, was asked to present to the Demons earlier this week.

Neale Daniher spoke to the Demons players this week ahead of their final against Hawthorn.

He coached Melbourne from 1998-2007, including in the club's last grand final – against Essendon in 2000 – and was diagnosed with MND in 2014.

Daniher reflected on his previous speech to the players and coaching group, focusing on the difference between "what you say and what you do".

"You might remember I said something like: 'When it's all said and done, more is said than done, and the mark of a person or a group of people is not what you say but what you do'," he said.

"I want to clarify that. It doesn't mean what you say isn't important. I don't mean that. When you come together, and you create a vision of what you want to be, and you talk about that, that's important.

"When you set your goals, you write them down and talk about it, that's important … but the mark you make in life is, your measure is never what you say, it is what you do, and that's the difference.

"Again, more is said than done. When you are doing what you are trying to do, it's hard, it takes resilience, toughness, courage … it's hard, a lot of people give up.

"There are more people out there who say what they are going to do, there are less people that do it."

He then urged the Demons, having returned to the finals for the first time since 2006 when Daniher was in charge, to improve on their win over Geelong in last week's elimination final. Victory over the Hawks would propel them into a preliminary final against the West Coast Eagles.

"What you are doing, I like … and the fans love it but keep doing what you are doing, maybe take it to another notch. Deep down you know you have another notch, deep down you know you will have to go another notch," Daniher said.

The Demons have named an unchanged side for the Friday night clash but the Hawks have made three changes, including losing midfield gun Jaeger O'Meara to injury.
