Munster agrees to rich new three-year deal with Melbourne Storm

Cameron Munster will remain in Melbourne after the superstar playmaker agreed to terms on a multi-million dollar three-year extension.

Munster was poised to become the biggest name on the open market from November 1, with more than half a dozen clubs ready to jostle for his signature. However, the Queensland and Australian pivot opted not to test his value on the open market, choosing to instead remain loyal to the club that handed him his first-grade debut in 2014.

The parties have agreed to terms after Munster’s agent flew into Melbourne this week for negotiations with Storm officials, and a contract will now be prepared and signed. The deal will make Munster one of the richest players in the game and ensure he remains with the grand finalists until the end of 2022.

Munster recently returned from an overseas holiday after he was forced to pull out of Australia’s season-ending Test matches for personal reasons. The break gave the 24 year old an opportunity to assess his future amid interest from clubs including the Roosters, Parramatta, Newcastle and North Queensland. However, there is a feeling he would play his best football at the Storm under Craig Bellamy, prompting him to recommit to the Storm.

Munster slotted into the five-eighth role at Melbourne this season and his form ensured he was picked in the position for representative matches. However, his preference is to play fullback and the retirement of champion Storm custodian may prompt Bellamy to shift him into the No.1 jersey.

"That's my favourite position, but it's hard for myself because I played Origin at five-eighth this year, I played for Australia at the World Cup at five-eighth," Munster said last month.

"It's tough because if I go back to square one at fullback, I've got the likes of Val Holmes, [James] Tedesco, Kalyn Ponga playing fullback.

"There are a few players there and it will be tough to try and challenge them for that jersey."
