Mourinho sacked: Ed Woodward blew his chance to land Klopp as Man Utd boss after describing Old Trafford as a ‘mythical’ place

Many pundits and United fans reacted to Jose Mourinho's sacking today by suggesting Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino or Pep Guardiola would have done better jobs.

And Old Trafford executive vice-chairman Woodward reportedly went to Munich in 2014 to try to lure then-Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp – with an unusual pitch.

David Moyes had just been axed after one unhappy year at Old Trafford.

And it seems United might have replaced him with Klopp instead of Louis van Gaal, had Woodward not made the Mickey Mouse error of going over the top with his description.

It is thought Woodward told Klopp Old Trafford was a "mythical place" akin to being “an adult in Disneyland” and ”where “dreams came true”.

According to sportswriter Raphael Honigstein's 2017 Klopp biography, Bring the Noise, the German found Woodward's approach "unsexy".

Klopp went on to take over Liverpool a year later and has improved United's fiercest rivals every season since.

His pacy, expressive, exciting team now lead the Premier League – 19 points and five places clear of the dishevelled United Mourinho has left behind.

Coach Michael Carrick has become caretaker manager at Old Trafford, or at least overseeing training.

But former United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, now boss of Norwegians Molde, is tipped to be named temporary chief.

Ex-Real Madrid chief Zinedine Zidane and former PSG manager Laurent Blanc are favourites for the permanent job, partly as they are both currently out of work.

But Spurs boss Pochettino chief is a popular contender amongst United supporters.

Fans also believe Klopp or Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola would have given United the flair they were famed for under long-serving legend Alex Ferguson.

And if Woodward had not gone all Disney on Klopp. maybe United's fortunes would not have been Frozen for the past four years.
