Mets sign Rajai Davis to add speed and outfield depth

If the Mets’ big splashes are over, the smaller ripples are on the way.

One of those came Monday, when the Mets announced they signed veteran outfielder Rajai Davis to a minor league contract with an invite to major league spring training.

Davis will provide depth to a very thin Mets outfield, which will be without Yoenis Cespedes for a large chunk of the season. Last year the team was nearing a Tim Tebow promotion. Such was and is the organizational depth at the position.

Davis, even at 38 and entering his 14th season, is a speed threat who makes consistent contact and plays the outfield well. Last year, in 101 games with Cleveland, he slashed .224/.278/.281 with 21 steals and one home run. Davis also has played with Boston, Oakland, Detroit, Toronto, San Francisco and Pittsburgh.
