Mets reportedly interested in Indians catcher Yan Gomes

The Mets need catching help and the Indians are listening on just about all of their veteran players, including Yan Gomes.

The two sides have discussed the catcher before, with manager Mickey Callaway a fan of Gomes’ defensive skills behind the plate from his days as Cleveland’s pitching coach.

Those talks have picked up again, according to a report by SNY, especially because the Indians are looking to pick up more assets with outfielder Michael Brantley a free agent, as well as relievers Cody Allen and Andrew Miller.

The Mets already have three catchers on their 40-man roster (Travis d’Arnaud, Kevin Plawecki and Tomas Nido), but Gomes is coming off one of his best seasons.

He was a first-time All-Star, hit 16 homers and had a .762 OPS, making it his most productive year at the plate since 2014.

Gomes will make $7 million in 2019, with club options for 2020 and 2021 for $9 million and $11 million.

Nevertheless, he’s 31 and is just two seasons removed from back-to-back brutal campaigns.

The Mets insist they are planning on contending in 2019. Whether that happens depends also on the future of Noah Syndergaard, and COO Jeff Wilpon did not rule out trading the star right-hander last week.

If they move Syndergaard and intend to compete next season, they will need to get some major league-ready players in return.

The Reds and Athletics are among the teams interested in ex-Met Matt Harvey, according to a FanCred report. The 29-year-old was traded to Cincinnati last season, when he had hit rock bottom, sporting a 7.00 ERA and refusing to accept a minor league assignment.
