Melbourne Cup 2018: Ed Dunlop woe as Red Verdon bruises foot five days before big race

The son of Lemon Drop Kid has bruised his foot and faces a race against time to make Tuesday's Blue Riband event.

Travelling head lad Robin Trevor-Jones told the Racing Post: "He's got a bruised foot, everything else has been ruled out by the vet, and we're working hard on it now.

"We've got a few days until the race so we've got time to get on it.

"I've no idea at all how he did it and it's highly annoying as it's just at the wrong time, but we're working on it now.

The blow is even more frustrating for connections as the five-year-old also had problems in the lead up to the Caulfield Cup, when he contracted dermatitis at the worst possible time.

"The vet's been and x-rayed his leg to rule everything else out, they're all clear, it’s been poulticed," Trevor-Jones went on.

"Fingers crossed everything's all right, the farrier felt it'd be a 24-hour issue but it's just at an annoying time as everything's fantastic with him.

"He's missed a gallop today which is annoying, but Steve and I are working hard on this foot now as we've got to draw all the soreness out of it. We've got five days."

A general 25-1 shot for the race that stops a nation, the five-year-old would bid for the biggest payday of his career if making the contest.
