Marouane Fellaini now fourth-highest paid star at Manchester United on £150,000-a-week AFTER tax

The Belgian midfielder was set to quit Old Trafford in the summer as he had let his contract run down.

He managed to negotiate a new mega-deal though, as desperate United clawed to keep on to the 30-year-old.

And now only Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba take home more than him at the Red Devils after HMRC take their cut.

David De Gea – who is in talks over a new deal – takes home around £200,000-a-week at present, but even he is eclipsed by Fellaini after tax.

A United source said: “Marouane rejected numerous offers during the last six months. It really did look like he was off before the club came back with one last try.

“It worked in the end. Fair play to him, he dragged it out and knew the manager still wanted to retain him. He has held his nerve.

“Even so, a few couldn't believe it when they heard how much he was clearing. It has put a few backs up around the place.”

It is understood United boss Jose Mourinho was desperate to keep hold of Fellaini and regards him as an important first-team player.

A number of clubs around Europe were interested in signing him, including AC Milan in Serie A and Galatasaray in Turkey.

The ex-Everton ace is on a higher basic wage than before and his tax is covered off, equating to around £7m-per-year net.

The Red Devils have a number of first-team stars running out of contract next summer and face a fight to keep Ander Herrera and Juan Mata.
