Manchester United stars held clear-the-air talks at training ground before dramatic last-gasp Newcastle win

The Red Devils have had a torrid start to the season, leading to calls for boss Jose Mourinho to be sacked.

He was handed a stay of reprieve on Saturday as United came back from 2-0 down against Newcastle to win 3-2.

And it is understood the win was inspired by an inquest between senior squad members late last week.

It is believed Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Luke Shaw were behind the rallying call at their Carrington training complex.

Mourinho was not at the meeting, but it is thought he knows it took place and is happy his players have taken responsibility.

An Old Trafford source said: “The inquest was without Jose and between a load of the senior members of playing staff.

“A few home truths were spoken after some of the poor performances this season. It was good to clear-the-air.

“A number of players stood up and said their piece. It had been coming for a while and was good for everyone.

"Nothing should be read into the fact Jose was not there."

“He wants the squad to take some responsibility for their actions.”

Meanwhile, it emerged yesterday that United’s win over Newcastle was also inspired by Pogba.

The 25-year-old was consulted on tactics at half-time during the Saturday afternoon clash.
