Mourinho gave a subtle fist pump as Anthony Martial put the Red Devils ahead at the home of the club where he won three Premier League titles.
But he was clearly delighted as Martial, who has been one of the Portuguese's biggest professional projects, let off a wonderful finish to put United ahead.
Martial was lurking on the left-hand side as the ball fell to his feet from Marcus Rashford's cross.
And his right-footed finish slotted perfectly into Kepa's left-hand post.
The bench then cleared, racing up the touchline but Mourinho stood up, muted and po-faced.
But he was clearly delighted that one of the toughest charges in his career had stepped up for his under-fire side.
