Manchester United and City turned down chance to sign Arturo Vidal last month… due to his age and dodgy knee

The Chilean midfielder, 31, is on the brink of swapping Bayern Munich for Barcelona on three-year deal subject to a medical.

Now it has emerged both Manchester giants were offered the chance to take on Vidal but passed over fears of his ability to maintain his aggressive style of play.

Vidal has had two different surgeries on his knee – with the Premier League duo shocked by Bayern's sky-high valuation of £27million.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has been in the market for a central midfielder this summer, while United are considering parting ways with Paul Pogba.

But both clubs have missed out on their chance to land former Juventus star Vidal.

On the deal, a club statement read: "FC Barcelona and FC Bayern Munich have reached an agreement for the transfer of player Arturo Vidal.

"The agreement is for the next three seasons and is pending the medical examination that the player will undertake over the course of the next few days.

"FC Barcelona will shortly inform everyone about the arrival of the player and the agenda of the presentation ceremony."

SunSport reported yesterday that it is believed the Chilean international will move to the Nou Camp for around £27million.
