Man Utd ratings at Southampton: Greenwood and Pogba continue impressive starts to season but Martial struggles

MANCHESTER UNITED were unable to complete another comeback against Southampton to claim all three points at St Mary's.

The Saints led through a first-half Fred own goal before Mason Greenwood levelled thanks to some nifty footwork from Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman was once again United's chief threat on the South Coast but they couldn't force a winner, with Anthony Martial struggling up top.

Here, SunSport's Frankie Christou delivers his individual player ratings from St Mary's.

David De Gea – 7

The Spaniard pulled off a flurry of saves you would expect him to make as he continues to try and convince Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he is United’s No1. He denied Adam Armstrong with a spectacular save in the second-half and then punched away a stinging free-kick.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6

Wan-Bissaka was solid in defence as per usual but offensively produced very little. Too many times the full-back stopped United's momentum by deciding to pass it back instead of whipping a ball in.

The one time he mustered the confidence to try, he picked out Bruno Fernandes for a diving header which forced Alex McCarthy into a save. If he is going to become a world-class full back he needs to take a chance and put balls into the box.

Harry Maguire – 6

The United skipper was commanding at the back and any building attack would start with him.

He managed to deal with the threat of Adam Armstrong well but he was caught napping on the ball one too many times. It was not disastrous from Maguire but by his standards it was nowhere near his best.

Victor Lindelof – 6

With Raphael Varane sitting patiently on the bench, the Swede will know his place in the side is under threat. But this performance was as satisfactory as it gets.

He managed to sniff out the majority of danger sent his way but this is two games without a clean sheet and he will inevitably be the fall guy when Solskjaer decides to change things.

Luke Shaw – 6

Back at St Mary’s but Shaw was not back to his usual self. The England defender failed to bring his Euros best this time out, but he put in a shift and kept things moving.

Fred – 7

He may not grab the headlines but Fred does all the dirty work for his United side. The Brazilian closed down any Southampton threats and pulled off a vital block to deny Moussa Djenepo early on.

He will always be a trier but unfortunately this game will be remembered by him his deflection finding the back of the net.

Nemanja Matic – 5

This was not a performance to warrant another start. The Serbian midfielder was sloppy in possession and was caught out by Southampton’s high press on countless occasions in the first-half.

Mason Greenwood – 8

Despite proving his credentials up top against Leeds, the youngster was shunted out onto the left to make room for Martial.

But that did not stop him from getting on the scoresheet and scoring another vital goal – two weeks on the trot. He has used this summer to beef himself up and if he carries on he will become undroppable.

Bruno Fernandes – 8

Fresh from his hat-trick last week the little magician dominated again on the offensive end.

He continued to put dangerous balls into the Saints penalty area but was easily knocked off the ball by Jack Stephens for Southampton’s goal. Yet he made up for it on the other end by being central to any United attack.

Paul Pogba – 8

His future may be up in the air but this could be the best we have seen from him in a United shirt.

He showed his four assists against Leeds was no flash in the pan as he came up with another for Mason Greenwood.

Anthony Martial – 5

Back in the starting lineup since March and his rust showed. The Frenchman had a tame effort cleared off the line in the opening minutes and failed to control a perfect pass by Fernandes.

It was not his day and you have to question whether he will get another opportunity like this again.

Substitutes

Jadon Sancho – 7

Another cameo off the bench for the £73million new signing as he gets closer and closer to full match fitness.

Quick off the ball and even quicker on it. He showed what he can do in flashes.

Scott McTominay – 6

Assured performance as he slotted in next to Fred in the final twenty minutes.

Jesse Lingard – N/A

He did not have enough time to find his groove but the 28-year-old will be happy to be back on the pitch in a United shirt.
