Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's gamble to chuck Lingard on backfired after the England ace lasted just 18 minutes after he replaced the ex-Chelsea midfielder.
Herrera was the first man to be withdrawn from play, as Andreas Pereira came on for the Spaniard who suffered a suspected hamstring problem.
Meanwhile his compatriot Mata went off in the 25th minute as he limped off the pitch in what looked like a hip injury.
Liverpool were then forced to make a change when Roberto Firmino rolled his ankle, with Daniel Sturridge replacing the Brazilian striker.
And just when you thought the drama was over, Lingard — who started on the bench due to a hamstring problem of his own — had to be taken off for Alexis Sanchez.
While Marcus Rashford looked to be struggling with a problem of his own for the entire half as spent the opening 45 minutes gingerly trotting around.
Speaking of the injuries, Gary Neville said: "Jesse Lingard is so dynamic when he plays football, all he does is run.
"We've seen him out on the pitch for 15-20 minutes, he's hardly moved out of the No 10 spot.
"He hasn't been himself. Rashford isn't himself.
"Now Solskjaer has a real problem.
"You talk about test of character and personality – he'll find out a lot about the players left on the pitch."
