Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand wants to see Man City extend Liverpool's agonising wait for a Premier League title, calling it ‘lesser of two evils’

RIO FERDINAND conceded he would rather see Manchester City win the Premier League instead of Liverpool – because it would be the "better of two evils".

Manchester United's two biggest rivals of recent years are battling it out at the top of the table, with the Reds currently ahead but having played a game more.

And the Red Devils legend, 40, knows he would not be able to cope if Jurgen Klopp's side managed to hold off City and win a first league title since 1990.

Speaking to the Mirror, Ferdinand said: "This is the worst-possible scenario for someone that likes Manchester United, supports Manchester United and has played for Manchester United.

"And I'm a pundit that's got to speak about it publicly and squirm.

"So the better of the two evils is Manchester City winning the league as I've seen it, I've been part of it.

"I've seen it as a player and a football fan so I've been able to deal with it emotionally.

"You turn everything off. There aren't many Man City fans to have a go at me.

GLORY DAYS

"With Liverpool it's a different story.

"There's fans I didn't even know supported Liverpool that have come back out of the woodwork after 20 years of being silent that are starting to speak before they've won anything.

"So it'd be a lot more painful to see them win the league, but listen the best team will win it and whoever that is well done."

Ferdinand won six Premier League titles during his 12 years at Old Trafford, as well as two League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.

He was denied a seventh by Sergio Aguero's dramatic late winner against QPR in 2012 that clinched the title for City.

But United have not challenged for the league since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, seeing City win it twice since then.

And it is in the Etihad club's hands once again as they sit two points behind Liverpool but with eight games left to play, one more than the Merseysiders.

If Pep Guardiola's men were able to hold on and win the Premier League again this season, they would become the first team to defend the title since United a decade ago.

Of course, City were unstoppable last season, breaking so many records on their way to their 100-point haul.
