Man United target Chelsea star as shock alternative to Alderweireld

Manchester United have turned their attention to Kurt Zouma as they bid to bring in a defender ahead of the transfer deadline.

The Chelsea star impressed on loan at Stoke last season, despite their relegation, and after returning with Maurizio Sarri now in charge, there is a queue at centre-back.

Zouma may be sent out on loan again, with Everton keen, but L’Equipe believe Manchester United are now keen – but in a permanent move.

The Blues would be reluctant to let that happen, but should a player such as Anthony Martial be offered in exchange, the deal may escalate.

There is no hint that United are prepared to sell Martial though, despite his squabble with Jose Mourinho.

With a lack of progress in deals for Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina, Zouma may now be the desired choice.

The reason Jerome Boateng gave Jose Mourinho on phone for not wanting to join Manchester United

Jerome Boateng personally phoned Jose Mourinho to turn down the chance of playing for Manchester United – and the reason he gave has now been revealed.

The Red Devils have been keen on bolstering their defence all summer, with Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Yerry Mina all linked with moves to Old Trafford.

On Sunday, Man United played Bayern Munich in a friendly and made contact with the Bundesliga club with regards to how much Boateng would cost.

The German champions responded by reportedly quoting their defender, 29, at between €50m – €60m.
