Man United accidentally unveil new signing after singer visits training ground

So it was ironic they accidentally unveiled keeper Paul Woolston when he posed with singer Anne Marie and United aces like Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini at training.

Woolston, 20, has been trialling with United since September after Newcastle surprisingly released him.

And boss Jose Mourinho must hope he is better at keeping goal than United have been at keeping things quiet until his signing is officially revealed.

North East lad Woolston never quite made the breakthrough at St James' Park despite shining for England youths.

But after short loan spells with Gateshead, Darlington, Blyth Spartans and South Shields he made his senior Toon debut in the EFL Trophy last season.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez even publicly praised Woolston, saying: "He's a good keeper.

“He's quite good with his feet.

“I think he's keen to learn. He's been good with us in every training session."

But Benitez still let him go last summer.

Newly-promoted Cardiff seemed favourites to sign him but he was also linked with West Ham and Didier Drogba’s USA second-tier side Phoenix Rising, plus clubs from Spain and the Championship.

Now, though, United seem poised to confirm his arrival to compete with Matej Kovar and Alex Fojticek for a place in their 23s side.

Woolston wore the No 23 in training at Carrington this week when he was pictured with Essex songstress Anne-Marie.

The 27-year-old, whose biggest chart hit was the No1 single "Rockabye" with electronic music band Clean Bandit, was also snapped with Old Trafford big names Anthony Martial and Juan Mata.
