Man City star Ben Mendy could need surgery after pulling out of France squad injured

The 24-year-old has pulled out of the France squad to face Netherlands and Uruguay despite playing the full 90 minutes in the 3-1 win over Manchester United.

The World Cup winners described Mendy's injury as a "knee sprain" but according to L'Equipe City are worried the latest problem will require surgery to fix.

Mendy missed seven months of last season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee – however this new problem has occurred in his left.

City are understood to have been managing the injury throughout the season, with the Frenchman only featuring once in the Champions League but nine times from the start in the Premier League.

The former Marseille and Monaco defender has also suffered from a foot problem this term which has forced him to miss seven games.

Following his withdrawal from Didier Deschamps' squad, Mendy appeared to suggest he would not be spending long on the sidelines.

He wrote on Instagram: "Good luck @equipedefrance ?? I’ll be back asap…"

Mendy joins Manchester United pair Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba and Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette in pulling out of the games against the Dutch in the Uefa Nations League and the friendly with Uruguay.

Having been included in France's victorious World Cup squad, Mendy was left out of the group which faced Iceland and Germany in October and warned to manage his fitness properly.

After the two-week international break, City resume their season at West Ham before travelling to Lyon in the Champions League and then hosting Bournemouth in the Premier League.
