Long-time 1000 Guineas favourite OUT of big race to leave Frankie Dettori high and dry

FRANKIE DETTORI is on the hunt for a ride in the 1000 Guineas after long-time favourite Inspiral was ruled out.

John Gosden’s filly headed the market over the winter after winning all four of her starts as a juvenile.

But after a couple of days of uncertainty and weakness in the betting, Gosden confirmed yesterday his star was OUT of the fillies’ Classic.

Aidan O’Brien’s Tenebrism is the new 11-4 favourite with Dettori now looking for a spare and possibly without a mount in both the 1000 and 2000 Guineas.

Inspiral, owned by Cheveley Park, missed an intended racecourse gallop last week and drifted to 7-2 from 5-2 as the whispers started.

Only on Friday joint-trainer Thady Gosden said “Inspiral is fine” – but all was clearly not hunky dory in the Clarehaven camp.

The owners’ Chris Richardson confirmed: “John Gosden had an in-depth discussion with the boss, Mrs Thompson, and following that it was decided that sadly she would miss the 1000 Guineas.

"John feels she wasn't really ready for the race and when you receive that advice from a trainer such as John, you follow it and now we'll look to the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot as part of her programme.

"It is disappointing for all concerned but we must heed their advice.

"Royal Ascot is a favoured meeting of the Thompsons and we've had success there previously, it's the start of the year and we've still got lots of opportunities going forward."

Dettori will be hoping O’Brien, who he won the 1000 Guineas for on Mother Earth last season, may come up trumps and hand him a ride in either Guineas.

As well as Tenebrism, the Irish handler has Tuesday and Toy in contention.

In the 2000 Guineas, O’Brien is likely to send both Luxembourg and Point Lonsdale into battle.
