Leicester star James Maddison has a long England career ahead of him, says former Norwich team-mate Matt Jarvis

Jarvis saw Maddison, 21, come in at Norwich before earning his move to Leicester City this summer.

His fine form for the Foxes convinced Gareth Southgate to call him up for the Nations League double-header against Croatia and Spain in October before injury ruled him out for the November games.

Although he did not make his senior debut, the experience of being with the squad will no doubt have been priceless.

It will not be long before he gets that first cap under his belt and Jarvis – whose only England cap came against Ghana in 2011 – expects a long Three Lions career for the midfielder.

Speaking exclusively to SunSport, he said: “I messaged him saying congratulations it's fully deserved and he just needs to keep doing what he's doing at the weekend.

“I can't see him not playing for England. If he continues to improve and do what he's done then he definitely will.

“He's scoring goals, he's making goals. I saw a stat about him, Eden Hazard and Wilfried Zaha being among the most-fouled players.

“He's always on the ball, getting things going for his team. He's class.”

In his debut season, the former Coventry player has starred for Leicester, proving a key figure in Claude Puel’s side.

But despite starting 17 of their 18 Premier League games so far, Maddison has completed the full 90 just five times.

He was sent off at Brighton and has been hauled off by Puel 11 times this season, including at half-time against Crystal Palace – although he made amends this weekend with the assist for Jamie Vardy's winner at Chelsea.

Jarvis does not think his failure to play entire matches is because he is struggling to adapt physically but instead is purely part of Puel’s tactics.

The Norwich winger, 32, said: "I know as a player, and I know Madders, he won't be wanting to come off.

“He'll be wanting to play the full game but I'm sure it's tactical and it's something else because he's been their most creative and effective player so you wouldn't want to take him off.”

The pair never played together at Norwich, with Maddison’s spell at the club coinciding with Jarvis’ 31-month injury nightmare, from which he is only just returning.

But Jarvis saw him day-in, day-out and knows exactly what the Foxes star can do.

He added: “Last season just showed what he's capable of.

“He's started the season incredibly well at Leicester and he's only going to improve.”

Maddison signed for the Canaries in February 2016 but returned to childhood side Coventry on loan for the remainder of the season before a spell at Aberdeen.

But Jarvis recalls seeing the playmaker for the first time and was immediately convinced he was a real talent.

He added: “I remember the first training session I had with him when he came from Coventry.

“He had really good movement, could manipulate the ball, received the ball on the back foot and turned when people would normally just pass it back.

“He would be getting himself out of certain situations and I thought ‘Wow.’

“He's just got better and better and better. He's a fantastic, fantastic player, he really is.”

Maddison cemented his place in the team at Norwich last season, scoring 15 goals in 49 appearances and picking up the club’s player of the season gong.

But it was his winner in the 1-0 victory at rivals Ipswich that sealed his heroic status at Carrow Road.

So when he returned to his old stomping ground for England Under-21s in September, the locals were delighted to see their former star.

Jarvis said: “He got into the Norwich team, he played extremely well. He was the player of the season by a mile last season. He deserved it.

“He's a great lad. He still speaks to everyone here. It was nice to see him when the Under-21s trained at Norwich’s training ground. I went to watch the game at Carrow Road.

“He's such a good guy around the training ground, it's good to see him doing well.

“When you're at a place like Norwich, it's comfortable. He should feel like he can come back.”

Maddison started alongside Leicester team-mates Demarai Gray and Ben Chilwell for Aidy Boothroyd’s side in the 0-0 draw against the Netherlands.

The trio have all since been called up by Southgate, with Chilwell looking to make the left-back position his own for the Three Lions.

It is an exciting time for Puel’s boys but Maddison knows he also must give credit to Norwich for helping to get him where he is today.

During the September internationals, Maddison said: “I can only speak highly of my time at Norwich. It was brilliant for me. I loved it there and I think the fans loved me as well. We had a great relationship.

“Even off the pitch, if you’re walking around the city, fans will always come up and speak to you and they’re ever so polite to you.

“Norwich gave me the platform to perform in the Championship and between Daniel Farke and Stuart Webber, the manager and director of football, they gave me the opportunity to go out, express myself and play.

“That’s what led to my England call-up, which was something I’d always dreamed of, so it’s something I’ll always be grateful to them for.”

Norwich ace Matt Jarvis opens up on his 31 MONTHS of injury hell ahead of comeback

IT MAY sound harsh but you could be forgiven if you had forgotten about Matt Jarvis.

A reminder: he impressed at Wolves, joined England’s one-cap wonder club and then moved to West Ham for £10.75million.

He joined Norwich a few years ago… but what happened after that?

The answer is, quite a lot — even if he has not played a professional match since May 2016, a 3-0 defeat for the Canaries at Everton.

Speaking exclusively to SunSport, the winger described how painful the last 31 months have been, both physically and mentally.

Jarvis said: “I’ve been extremely frustrated and disappointed.

“I've had three operations, I've got back from each one and then something else has picked up.

“Every time I think I'm there, the lights stop glowing.”
