Las Palmas have plea to La Liga to suspend clash with Huesca rejected as huge wildfire rages through Gran Canaria with 2,000 evacuated – The Sun

LAS PALMAS have had a plea to suspend tonight's match against Huesca rejected by La Liga despite Gran Canaria being hit by a huge wildfire.

The Spanish island is under assault from a deadly blaze which has forced over 2,000 people to be evacuated.

Las Palmas, who play in the second division of Spanish football, confirmed this afternoon that a request had been sent to the top authorities asking for their home clash with Huesca to be put on hold as a mark of respect for those affected by the fires.

However, La Liga quickly informed Las Palmas that the game would still go ahead this evening.

And the news did not go down well with president Miguel Ramirez, who criticised the decision.

He said: “Our heritage is burning, it’s a complicated week with many people affected. It’s a black day and the game goes to the background.

“The logical thing was to suspend it, but a few moments ago La Liga told us it will be played. We have no other choice.

“It is a very special situation for all Grancanarians, this hurts us a lot morally and sentimentally.

“We do not know the arguments that La Liga gives us to play the game. I imagine I will find out soon.

“But we will comply with the decision taken, what I have to do now is be close to the people who need help.

“I have no doubt that Huesca had no problem in postponing the game.”

Las Palmas confirmed that they will be wearing shirts as a sign of support for the firefighters battling the blaze.

Huesca players will also don the jersey, which bears the slogan: “Fuerza Gran Canaria.”
