Kreuzer out for rest of the season with elevated heart rate issue

The recurrence of an elevated heart rate has forced star Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer out of Sunday’s clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium.

The Blues have already confirmed that the 29-year-old will sit out the remainder of the season, missing the final two games of the year against the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide.

The 173-gamer suffered a similar episode during Carlton’s 64-point loss to St Kilda in round 17.

He was replaced by Nick Graham.

Football manager Andrew McKay said on the club’s website that Kreuzer would see a specialist during the week.

“Matthew experienced an elevated heart rate at training yesterday (Saturday), a similar occurrence to what he dealt with a number of weeks ago,” he said.

“Clearly with a condition of this nature, we need to treat it with caution so in conjunction with the specialists and Matthew, we have decided to rule him out for the remainder of the season.

“He will see the cardiologist again this week to determine the next step in his treatment. Importantly, Matthew is OK and all parties are treating this situation with the utmost care.”

Fremantle were also forced to make a late change, with tagger Bailey Banfield replaced by forward-turned defender Shane Kersten.
