The Portuguese boss has left the club with immediate effect as the Red Devils languish 19 points off Premier League leaders Liverpool.

After the failings of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and now Jose Mourinho, the Man United board will be under pressure to hire a world-class manager who can take them back to Sir Alex Ferguson's glory days.

But they are not rushing, promoting assistant coach Michael Carrick as a temporary manager.

In the mean time, United will be look for a short-term caretaker to see them through to the end of the season.

Who is the favourite to become next permanent manager?

The club have already confirmed that they will not be hiring a new permanent manager until the end of the current season.

Within minutes of Mourinho getting sacked, bets flew in for Michael Carrick to be the next main man in the hot seat, with Zinedine Zidane second and a certain Nicky Butt third favourite.

But Laurent Blanc is now the lead contender for the position with Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino completing the top three.
