Jose Mourinho: Football psychologist Kevin George reveals why the Man United boss stormed out of press conference

The Man United manager spectacularly blew up in front of the media last night, storming out of a press conference before demanding respect following his team's 3-0 capitulation to Tottenham.

And George, 35, believes that the 'Special One' is suffering without the support of his fans and the board and feels threatened by the competition of his rivals.

Kevin told SunSport:"I think he's very stressed and in an unresourceful state.

"His outburst wasn't about that press conference. It was an explosion that came after multiple factors.

"When we first saw Mourinho on these shores, he was very strategic with the way he spoke to the media.

"People thought he was cocky and charming, but we all loved him.

" If one of his teams lost, he would talk about himself, say he was the Special One and direct the attention to him and away from his team.

"However, at last night's press conference, when he talked about his three championships, that didn't seem strategic at all.

"He showed an emotional response and completely lost control."

George continued: "Also, it's important to look at the physical changes that have happened over time.

"When he first came to England, he looked fresh, had brown hair and was a charming guy.

"Now, he appears grey, moody and he's explosive – the charm has completely gone and he is biting on everything.

"And that's how you can really tell that he's angry, stressed, isolated and doesn't know where to go."

George, author of Soccology: Inside the Hearts and Minds of the Professionals on the Pitch, thinks there are multiple reasons for Mourinho's current state of mind.

He explained: "When Jose began his career, particularly at Porto, he exceeded expectations.

"And even when he moved to Chelsea, there wasn't really much competition.

"He had a blank cheque book to buy who he wanted, but this is his first real challenge.

"He's now up against two managers in Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, who have fresh ideas and also have big cheque books.

"Naturally, people compare Man United to Man City and are asking, 'Pep spent this amount and look how well they are doing, what's going with you?'

"And not only is he not winning, City are doing so well. I think this comparison has built up the pressure in him.

"When we get in that space we bring our unfortunate side out.

"He's behaving like a trapped child and he appears to be quite lonely.

"Remember back to his Chelsea days, even if he had problems with Roman Abramovich, the fans loved him.

"But now the Man United fans are saying they're not used to this style of football, the owners are saying forget getting money for a left back you've got Luke Shaw.

"He's not used to that and he's absolutely struggling."

George believes that the reason Mourinho gloated about his three Premier League wins in the press conference is because he's hurting at the moment not winning.

The former Charlton Athletic footballer also believes the Portuguese boss is not fearful of the sack.

"I don't think Mourinho is afraid of losing his job, because his ego is too strong. I believe it's more about him not winning.

"He knows if he gets fired he'll be able to get another job pretty easily.

"Jose wants to be able to gloat. Even in that interview, and he's just been beaten 3-0 at home, he has to remind everyone how many titles he's won!"

The football psychologist, once again, brought up the control Mourinho normally has on his emotions and how he uses them to drive him forward.

George reckons Mourinho's press conference tantrum is a sign that he's lost control.

He divulged: "I remember in the Nou Camp when Jose was managing Inter, Thiago Motta got sent off, they were losing and Zlatan Ibrahimovic was about to come on.

"Jose went up to Pep Guardiola on the bench and whispered in his ear.

"Inter ended up pulling off a miraculous win and Jose was asked in the press conference what he said to Pep.

"Mourinho said, 'I don't know, but I needed to give myself a boost.' So this is someone who is emotionally aware and so in control.

"But when I saw last night's press conference, it made me think he's lost it. He's gone from so emotionally aware to storming out of a press conference and gloating about the past.

"And that's something he would've hammered everybody about in the past."
