Jose Mourinho has asked his Manchester United bosses to make funds available to sign Kalidou Koulibaly in January.
Napoli centre back Koulibaly is among the highest rated defenders in Europe, with United still searching for fresh talent to boost their backline.
Senegal star Koulibaly is also said to be keen on a switch to the Premier League, despite signing a new contract in Italy earlier this year.
And according to the Sunday Times, he is on United manager Mourinho’s wish list when the window reopens.
Mourinho had been keen to add a centre back to his ranks in the summer – but failed in attempts to bring Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Diego Godin, Jerome Boateng and Samuel Umtiti, among others, to Old Trafford.

And the current Red Devils stars have done nothing this season to alter the Portuguese’s opinions with a series of poor displays from the likes of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.
The message coming from Ed Woodward and the board in the summer was that there was no value in the market in the position.
Mourinho is also hoping to secure a deal for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic after watching him during the international break.
