John Sterling, Suzyn Waldman insist there’s ‘no plans to retire’

John Sterling doesn’t plan on leaving any time soon.

The longtime Yankees announcer and color commentator Suzyn Waldman went on the Sports Illustrated Media Podcast, and both were asked about what the near future holds for them.

The pair expressed their plans to stick around, and as host Jimmy Traina was wrapping up the interview, Sterling went out of his way to make his commitment clear.

“I will tell you this: We have no plans to retire,” Sterling said. “We have plans to do this for a long time.”

Sterling’s iconic streak of calling Yankees games ended in July at 5,060 straight, when he took a four-game break after “feeling under the weather.” Ryan Ruocco filled in his place, drawing strong reviews in the process. Ruocco is currently filling in for Michael Kay, who had vocal-chord surgery, on YES Network broadcasts.

Sterling, 81, has since returned to the booth, and plans on staying there for the foreseeable future.
