  • He praised Paul for ‘putting up a good fight’ and coming from ‘awkward angles’

John Fury has called for his son Tommy to fight Jake Paul in Saudi Arabia again after the former Love Island star’s split decision win on Sunday.

Fury won the fight by split decision- with the judges calling the fight 76-73, 76-73, 74-75 in his favour- but found it tougher than he had predicted as he was knocked down and faced a point deduction for holding.

Paul was also deducted a point for hitting Fury in the back of the head during the fifth round when the Brit already led 3-1, which some felt was a harsh decision from referee Hector Afu.

John Fury, who also coaches Tommy, praised the American’s performance before sharing his plans for the future.

‘Jake Paul put up a good fight,’ he told Fight Hub TV. ‘It was a good fight for the fans. It was a good clash in the desert. Let’s hope there are more big fights in Saudi,’

The judges took a point off both fighters but eventually called the bout 76-73, 76-73, 74-75 in Fury’s favour

‘Jake Paul plays his part. He was under a lot of pressure. What heart the kid showed under duress pressure.’

‘I think the referee did a good job. He was right to take points away from both of them.’

The 58-year-old continued: ‘Jake Paul is very good, a strong kid. He comes from awkward angles. I told Tommy, “Listen, it may turn into a dogfight. We’re prepared for it.”‘

When asked what was next for Tommy, the coach added: ‘Let’s do it again in Saudi Arabia. The sky’s the limit. Rematch, rematch Jake Paul in Saudi.’

The American has already promised he would be back for a rematch after blaming the loss on ‘illness’ and an ‘arm injury’, with his opponent telling him to ‘bring it on’.

After Fury’s win, both fighters were willing to put their differences aside to show respect for their counterpart on the night.

BT Sport’s cameras caught the two speaking after the fight and Fury could be heard saying: ‘You’re a tough man. You’ve come a long way.

‘You started a few years ago, I started when I was six. I’ve got nothing but love and respect for you brother.’

Paul looked dejected as Fury spoke to him, given the devastating loss, but still mustered a message: ‘Thank you bro’.
