Jimmy Butler trade request sparks war between teammate, ESPN analyst

All-Star guard Jimmy Butler’s request out of Minnesota dragged the Timberwolves’ dirty laundry out into the public.

Andrew Wiggins and retired pro Stephen Jackson got into an odd spat on social media Wednesday night after Wiggins’ brother, Nick, tweeted “Hallelujah” about Butler requesting a trade out of Minnesota. Butler also responded with his own “Hallelujah” Instagram story, but he was just a bit player in Wednesday night’s back-and-forth.

Nick Wiggins’ tweet, which has since been deleted, was captured on the internet and spurred Jackson to post a bizarre video calling out both Wiggins brothers. Jackson, now an ESPN analyst, role-played a conversation between the brothers over the tweet.

In the video, he questioned Andrew’s heart and essentially said he should be begging Butler to stay in Minnesota if he wants to be back in the playoffs next season.

Unsurprisingly, Andrew Wiggins clapped back shortly after in an Instagram story questioning Jackson’s optics.

“Old dudes stay hating like he was anything special bum ass,” Wiggins sounded. “… I keep that same energy everywhere I go!”

Jackson responded by blowing some kind of smoke out of his mouth, saying he hopes Wiggins has “a good year” while wishing him all the best.

“I hope somewhere you can find some heart and find some passion for the game and have a good year. I really wish you the best.

“Old? I’m 40. Thank God, I’m happy to see 40. Bum? I ain’t never been that. You know that. I’m from the old school. I’m cut under the old law. Respect it or check it […] Say man, make sure your energy is straight when you see me. I’m pretty sure you know who I am.”

Shortly after, Nick Wiggins rejoined the conversation on Instagram and questioned Jackson’s career accolades — he averaged 15.1 points per game across 14 seasons — specifically his scoring output and production next to Tim Duncan and Tony Parker when he played on the Spurs.

“What NBA [you] played in again,” Jackson responded. “… I’m on TV more than your brother.”

Butler, who requested a trade Wednesday, prefers to be traded to the Clippers, according to ESPN. However, his three-team shortlist includes both the Nets and Knicks. He helped the Timberwolves sneak into the playoffs for the first time since 2004 last season.

He reportedly wants out of Minnesota after being frustrated with teammates — specifically Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns — and over-usage by coach Tom Thibodeau.

Butler is seeking a max contract for five years and $190 million.
