The Jets’ lead recruiter has a new target.
Jets safety/recruiting coordinator Jamal Adams tweeted at disgruntled Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown on Wednesday as speculation swirled that Pittsburgh could consider dumping the All-Pro wide receiver.
“Yo @AB84 NYC will appreciate you!! #JETS,” Adams posted on Twitter.
He expanded on that tweet during a radio interview on WFAN’s “CMB” show on Wednesday afternoon.
“Most definitely,” Adams said about him wanting Brown to come to the Jets. “That dude is a star. Some people have their opinion about him but one thing I do know from watching and witnessing it, AB’s going to come to play. When he steps on that football field, he’s all business. Everything is about football with him. I would definitely love to have him here.”
Adams believes Brown would mesh well with quarterback Sam Darnold.
“Him and Sam I think would have a great connection,” Adams said. “That would give Sam another big-time weapon.”
The possibility of Brown leaving Pittsburgh has become a hot topic since he missed Sunday’s finale against the Bengals. Originally believed to be injury-related, reports have surfaced of him having an altercation with a teammate last week and then failing to show up for practices and meetings the rest of the week.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Wednesday that a lack of communication was the issue. While he said Brown has not requested a trade, Tomlin did not slam the door on it. When asked if there is a point where Brown’s antics outweigh his production, Tomlin said, “Certainly.”
Trading Brown would create $21 million in dead money for the Steelers’ 2019 salary cap, making a trade seem unlikely. He counts $22 million against the cap if he is on the team.
The Jets need a No. 1 wide receiver, but would they want someone who can be as disruptive as Brown? There is also the question of what the Steelers would seek in a trade for him. The price figures to include a first-round pick.
Adams hit on a few other topics on “CMB.” He elaborated on his Twitter endorsement of USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury on Tuesday night. The Jets are interested in Kingsbury and are expected to interview him. Adams tweeted on Tuesday night that Kingsbury, the former Texas Tech coach, was his top choice.
“He’s an offensive-minded coach. He’s going to bring swagger,” Adams said. “He’s going to develop Sam into a great quarterback. Look at his track record, man – Johnny Manziel, Pat Mahomes, Baker Mayfield. Look at what he did at Texas A&M, the offensive background. Come on, man.”
When the hosts suggested that Adams might want a coach who focuses on defense more, Adams said that is not the case.
“Listen, offensive-minded head coach. Help Sam out,” Adams said. “Sam is going to be phenomenal. That’s what people don’t realize — Sam’s going to be phenomenal. We have a franchise quarterback. He’s going to do his thing. You bring in an offensive-minded coach … the defense, we’ll get that handled.”
Adams made it clear after Sunday’s loss to the Patriots that he does not feel the Jets have enough talent or “dawgs,” as he put it. He plans on recruiting players this offseason. Adams met with general manager Mike Maccagnan and CEO Christopher Johnson on Monday.
“We had a great talk — Mr. Maccagnan and I,” Adams said. “I think we became a lot closer after our meeting. We’re on the same page. I have all the faith in the world in him. Mr. Johnson is going to do a phenomenal job as well. Our relationship has definitely become closer through the whole year. We had two great meetings. I’m excited for it.”
