Javier Hernandez is ‘causing a toxic atmosphere in the West Ham dressing room’

The Mexico international earns around £145,000-a-week at the London Stadium and is by far the club's best paid player.

Marko Arnautovic is the only other player on a three-figure sum, and that is reportedly causing discourse among the Hammers squad.

Hernandez has started just two Premier League games this season under Manuel Pellegrini.

And in 43 outings since signing for £16m from Bayer Leverkusen he has scored just 10.

According to an unnamed individual who appears on Twitter under the pseudonym @ExWHUemployee, his continued omission is creating havoc behind the scenes.

Speaking to The West Ham Way podcast, he said: “The problem we’ve got with him [Hernandez] is that he’s our highest paid player and he doesn’t play.

“So that causes an issue with those players who do play regularly.

“Just by having him there, on the bench, earning that money and not playing and scoring, then other players start to think: ‘well if this player’s on £145,000 a week, then I should be on that or more’ and so it’s almost becoming a little bit toxic indirectly by having him there.

“And I agree we haven’t played to his strengths, we’ve made him play as a lone forward when I don’t think he has the physique to play that.

“We’ve had this debate before about [Sergio] Aguero, but I think Aguero’s a stockier, more solid, robust player than Hernandez and if you look at any other player that leads a line in the Premier League, they’re all big, over six foot, stocky, powerful, so the system doesn’t work for Hernandez.

“However, there’s chances. He had a chance against Huddersfield with the header that went just over. There’s chances and he’s not taken them unfortunately, as much as it pains me.”

The ex-Manchester United forward has netted just twice during the 2018-19 campaign, against AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup and Burnley in the Premier League.

He was linked with a switch away from east London in the summer but Pellegrini moved to clarify that he has a role to play.

But as Hernandez continues to be overlooked, his future at West Ham looks to be increasingly bleak.

@ExWHUemployee, added: Look how excited West Ham fans were. We all travelled up to Man United wearing sombreros for that game [Hernandez’s debut on the opening day of last season].

“We were buzzing for that. And I was buzzing, I couldn’t wait for him to sign.

“But you look back and you think: ‘okay, maybe it is time for him to go now in January’.”
