Jamie Vardy fighting to save his season as Leicester star suffers injury relapse ahead of huge PSV quarter-final tie

JAMIE VARDY is fighting to save his season after suffering a setback in training.

The 35-year-old Leicester City legend has been sidelined for a month with a knee injury he suffered in the Foxes' 1-0 home win over Leeds on March 5.

At the time Vardy was expected to be out for four weeks, with Foxes' medics hopeful he could be ready to return to action following the recent international break.

However Brendan Rodgers today revealed his veteran hitman suffered a relapse ahead of tomorrow night's crucial Europa Conference League quarter-final with Dutch aces PSV Eindhoven.

Now Leicester's talisman  faces a race against time to be available again this season, should the Foxes go all the way in the competition.

Rodgers confirmed the shock setback and said: "It is hard to put a timeline on it. He is still feeling pain within the knee.

"He can run and he is outside, but when he is striking the ball there is an issue so we will have to get to the bottom of that.

“I just spoke to Jamie. He had been outside, running in straight lines. It was just when he was opening up the MCL a bit when he was striking the ball that he was getting some pain.

"I will have to speak to the medical team to see where we are at, but it doesn’t sound as if he is too close to being back.”

Vardy was sidelined for two months earlier this season with a hamstring injury and the Leeds game marked his first appearance in 2022.

Despite missing a large chunk of the season, only 13-goal James Maddison can better Vardy's tally of 12 goals from 24 appearances this season.

So it will come as a sledgehammer blow to Leicester's hopes of winning a first-ever European trophy if Rodgers is to be deprived of Vardy's goal return of a goal every two games.

The Leicester icon now faces a battle against the clock should Rodgers Foxes make it all the way to the first-ever Europa Conference League final, which will be held in Tirana, Albania on May 25.
