Heroic BT Sport worker who saved Glenn Hoddle's life by using CPR after heart attack says it 'was nothing' and 'I just did what I could to help'

Simon Daniels, working at BT Sport as a sound supervisor, added: “It was pretty horrific. But I just did what I could to help.”

The ex-England boss collapsed in the East London TV studio from a massive heart attack on his 61st birthday.

Yesterday the dad of three remained serious in intensive care.

While studio guests including pundit Harry Redknapp froze in horror, Simon, 47, began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

He then used a defibrillator to restart Glenn’s heart until paramedics arrived.

Simon was invited to see the star in hospital on Saturday night, where he was personally thanked by the family.

Yesterday the part-time special constable was at a scheduled Thames Valley Police training course.

Simon, of Aylesbury, Bucks, added: “Robbie Savage, Paul Ince and Harry Redknapp were all praising me after I had dealt with Glenn. I told them, ‘look, I just did what I had to do’.

“It didn’t matter that it was Glenn Hoddle or someone who I didn’t know. Someone was having a medical episode and if I didn’t do something it would have got worse.

“It’s weird being at the centre of it all. I’m very flattered.”

Former Wales ace Savage later tweeted: “So proud of our BT sport team today, all heroes especially Simon.”

And ex-Man Utd star Ince added: “Huge thanks to all the crew, especially Simon who performed a miraculous job today.”

Redknapp said: “One guy from BT Sport was fantastic, he was first aid trained and he was excellent.”

Simon, who runs audio firm Sigma Broadcast and also worked on the royal wedding, The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, tweeted back: “Just did what was necessary to give him a fighting chance. It was my training that paid off.”

Yesterday Glenn’s pal, sports historian Norman Giller, said: “Glenn has come through an operation but is alert and aware. He has had three stents inserted but is fighting and with us.”

Sources close to the ex-Spurs midfielder said: “Simon saved Glenn’s life. We will be indebted to him forever.”

Glenn’s spokesman said yesterday: “He continues to respond well to treatment. The family are grateful to everyone in the football family, and beyond, that have sent kind messages of support.

“In particular, Glenn and his family would like to publicly thank BT Sport staff that treated him immediately.”

Viewers of BT’s live Saturday Morning Savage show had earlier seen Robbie present Glenn with a birthday cake.

Glenn then showed off his skills in a game of football table-tennis.

The star, whose brother Carl, 40, died of a brain aneurysm in 2008, was later due on results show Score but the programme was cancelled after he collapsed.
