Heisman voters now appear to be in total agreement on the top two contenders for the award. They’ll each have one more chance to perform during conference championship weekend.
As has been the case for most of the season, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Oklahoma signal caller Kyler Murray head the penultimate weekly USA TODAY Sports Network Heisman survey. Those two were listed either first or second on all 16 surveys submitted this week by official electors who work for the network.
Tagovailoa was first on 13 of those and expanded his lead to 10 points after his big second half helped the Crimson Tide pull clear of Auburn. He connected on 11 of 12 throws for 208 yards and four touchdowns after intermission, and accounted for a total of six TDs on the day.
Murray was just as impressive in the Sooners’ 59-56 win at West Virginia, in which he amassed 478 yards of total offense and was responsible for four TDs. They’ll present their closing arguments on Saturday as they look to lead their respective teams into the College Football Playoff.
Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins moved back into third in the survey on the strength of the Buckeyes’ decisive win against Michigan that earned them a spot in the Big Ten title game.
West Virginia’s Will Grier received three points after coming up just short against Oklahoma. Washington State’s Gardner Minshew II slipped to fifth place with two points after the Cougars were grounded by Washington.
Clemson defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, the lone non-quarterback to get a mention, rounds out the survey.
