Greed is good for Glory goal hero Kilkenny

People keep telling Neil Kilkenny to be more greedy and the star Perth Glory midfielder might start following their advice after his stunning goal against Newcastle last week.

Kilkenny's beautiful curled strike from outside the box was the highlight of Glory's 2-0 win.

It was Kilkenny's fourth goal of the season, but his first from outside the penalty area.

The 33-year-old is the league's most accurate long-range passer, with his pin-point lob helping set up Andy Keogh's opener.

But his second-half strike showed he is also a scoring weapon from long range.

"A lot of people say to me I don't shoot enough, that I'm not greedy enough around the box," Kilkenny said.

"Maybe I should shoot a bit more. I normally just pass it.

"I just cut inside and I thought 'Why not hit it?'

"The way I hit it, it had the curl to go towards the far post. I was happy that it went in."

Glory have enjoyed a stunning start under new coach Tony Popovic, losing just once in the first 16 rounds.

Their win over Newcastle put them four points clear on top of the table, and they will be aiming to notch a second straight victory at home against Wellington on Saturday.

Glory were held to scoreless draws against Melbourne City and Adelaide United before beating Newcastle.

Kilkenny said that two-game goal drought was because of rival teams trying to stifle Glory's free-flowing style.

"People say that we didn't play so well. I think a lot of teams now are showing us a lot of respect by changing formations to nullify us," Kilkenny said.

"They all go man-for-man now because they don't want to leave someone free because they know we want to play."

Glory will be boosted by the return of forward Chris Ikonomidis against Wellington following the Socceroos' early exit from the Asian Cup.
