In a decision that represents good news for England’s 2030 World Cup bid, Uefa’s executive committee backed President Aleksander Ceferin’s preferred choice.
Ceferin was keen to ensure the safest bid won as he prepares for what Uefa insiders accept could be a chaotic 2020 championships which will be split over 12 nations.
But the decision has implications for the plans for an English led British Isles World Cup in 12 years’ time.
Ceferin has publicly stated his support for the FA’s plans to lead the 2030 campaign as Europe’s sole candidate.
Former Manchester United chief executive David Gill and outgoing Arsenal boss Ivan Gazidis, both members of the executive committee, supported Ceferin in his push for Germany.
And the victory for the Uefa President’s choice is proof that he has genuine clout and is emerging as the strongest figure in world football.
Germany had long been the favourites but their bid was hit by the Mesut Ozil “racism” storm and a public role between FA President Reinhard Grindel and Fifa boss Gianni Infantino.
But Turkey were badly damaged by the official Uefa evaluation report which questioned the country’s commitment to human rights and doubted the economic and infrastructure plans.
