Five options for Anthony Joshua’s next fight after Alexander Povetkin

Anthony Joshua overcame a slow start to deliver a devastating knockout in the seventh round and defeat Russian Alexander Povetkin.

The Brit retained his WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO world heavyweight championship belts at Wembley on Saturday night.

In front of about 80,000 fans, Joshua moved on to 22 fights unbeaten in his professional career by handing the 39-year-old Povetkin only his second defeat.

Joshua floored the Russian with a stunning left-right combination which the challenger did well to recover from.

The referee stepped in after another barrage though and Joshua celebrated.

But what now? The 2012 Olympic champion will be back at the national stadium on April 13.

Here, we look at possible fights for Joshua – including Deontay Wilder – as he bids to cement his legacy in the ring…

Deontay Wilder

The one everybody wants to see, between the only two heavyweight world champions.

Wilder was due to be ringside in Cardiff as part of Showtime’s broadcast team but declined to travel when he was told he wouldn’t be able to get in the ring with Joshua.

Wilder overcame a tough challenge from Luis Ortiz earlier this year to retain his WBC belt and was also offered a fight with Dillian Whyte.

His team had been negotiating with Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn but a deal could not be struck and the American will now face Tyson Fury on December 1.

Dillian Whyte

Play it again, Sam? Whyte was knocked out by Joshua in the seventh round of their first fight in 2015 but has worked his way back into contention. Most recently he delivered a sickening KO in the sixth round of his clash with Lucas Browne to keep hold of his WBC Silver title.

That could lead to a fight with Wilder, but so far the American has rejected all offers to fly over to London to take on the Brixton man, and if Wilder also can’t agree terms with Joshua, the two Brits could square off again in a fight that would at least have a tasty build-up.

Whyte beat Parker in July and could rematch Dereck Chisora in December before a fight with Joshua next year.

There have been bigger shocks in boxing than Tyson Fury beating Deontay Wilder – but it remains a long shot.

The Brit challenges the only other world champion on December 1 in either Las Vegas or Los Angeles and will have one eye on a potential shot at Joshua.

Fury would cause Joshua problems with his unorthodox style – and it would be worth it for the pre-fight trash talk alone.

Jarrell Miller

A name that may not be familiar to every UK boxing fan but promoter Eddie Hearn has mentioned Miller as a possible opponent for Joshua’s American debut when he makes it.

With 20 wins (with 18 knockouts) and one draw from his 21 professional fights, the New Yorker could provide a stern test, but the fight is unlikely to bring the excitement of many of Joshua’s other options.
