Fans aren’t happy with the amount of screen time given to Kelly Marie Tran in the latest “Star Wars” film.
The actress, who is of Vietnamese decent, became the first woman of color to play a major role in the fantasy universe when her character, Rose Tico, was first introduced in 2017’s “The Last Jedi.”
In “The Rise of Skywalker,” which hit theaters Dec. 20, Tran is featured in only a few scenes – mostly with Leia – since the rest of the major heroes are on the big mission. She’s also in the big climactic action extravaganza at the end.
According to Slate, she appeared for one minute and 16 seconds of the film’s two-hour and 22-minute running time. Disney and Tran’s reps couldn’t be reached for comment.
Frustrated fans used the hashtags #JusticeForRose and #RoseTicoDeservedBetter to call out the filmmakers for their decision.
“Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu called for a Rose Tico spinoff series.
“Ok @disneyplus. Put me in coach. Let’s make this series happen. #RoseTicoDeservedBetter @starwars,” he tweeted.
“FIFTEEN LINES. Rose Tico got fifteen lines in The Rise of Skywalker. She deserved better than that,” user @StephenTissell tweeted, referring to the racist, sexist harassment aimed at Tran after the last film.
Tran was met with a wave of online harassment after the release of “Jedi”: The fandom had been split on whether the movie met expectations, and some fans hated on Tran and her character in particular.
After months of harassment, the actress deleted all her Instagram posts in June 2018. Her still-empty profile reads, “Afraid, but doing it anyway.”
