Gerwyn Price suffered an early exit from night 11 of the Premier League Darts in Aberdeen as Michael van Gerwen produced a devastating comeback in their quarter-final.

It has been a difficult few weeks for the Welshman, who has been struggling with a hand injury and then had to pull out of the German Grand Prix at the weekend with suspected tonsillitis. It looked set to be a close contest as Price took a 3-2 lead. But the Green Machine then produced a thrilling burst, reeling off four straight legs to win 6-3 with an impressive average of just under 107.

After his bright start, Price faded, averaging 92 and hitting just one 180. The result prompted some fans to mock Price’s decision to switch his walk-in tune from Vanilla Ice’s ‘Ice Ice Baby’ to Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’. @Fodenszns tweeted: “See his roar at the end imagine that was Price wouldn’t hear the end of it” while Steven Frederick added: “As Katy Perry would say: and you’re gonna hear me rooooar.”

Explaining his decision last week, Price said: "I was just driving home with the family after we'd been out for a meal in Cardiff and 'Roar' came on. We were all singing along to it and I liked the beat of the music, so I thought 'why not make the change?"

Meanwhile, Van Gerwen marched on, beating James Wade in the semi-final before facing Jonny Clayton in the final. He already looks assured of a top-four finish and a place in the play-offs in Berlin in June.

Sky Sports commentator Mark Webster said: “He’s getting there, Michael, he’s confident, he’s ticked the box for the play-offs, forget that, he’s going to be there now. He now wants to finish top.”

Fans were also impressed with Van Gerwen's performance against Price, which sealed a semi-final clash with Wade, who squeezed past Michael Smith in his quarter-final.

Barnabas Nemeth tweeted: “After leg 6 there was no way for Price to win this, he could have done anything. MvG was magical. Well played!” while Stewart Johnston posted: “The champs unbeatable when he plays like that 124 average or something is crazy.”

@UtdAlkeo simply said: “Best player in the world again.” On Twitter, @ben1987 wrote: “Pretty unreal stuff. 11, 13, 12 & 15 dart legs to turn it around from 3-2”
