Man City and Tottenham thumped their opposition but it was Newport County and Barnet who grabbed the headlines after punching well above their weight to claim crucial victories.
Newport County beat former Premier League winners Leicester City 2-1, and non-league side Barnet edged out a 1-0 victory over Championship flyers Sheffield United.
Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham all won comfortably and it was Brighton who were victorious when they locked horns with fellow Premier League side Bournemouth.
There was also controversy after one goalkeeper appeared to use a Nazi salute when celebrating a goal.
