England's clash away to Spain in doubt as heavy rain batters Seville ahead of Uefa Nations League clash

A torrential downpour has been lashing much of southern Spain for a few hours now – and it doesn't look like getting much better for the rest of the night.

The scene at the Estadio Benito Villamarin, home of Real, Betis, is not a pretty one.

Huge puddles surround the playing surface, and it is not inconceivable that these will spread still further.

Safety of spectators could also be an issue inside the stadium and out, which in itself could mean the game is postponed.

The pitch, however, is still believed to be firm – but that will surely change soon.

Electrics in the media sections in the stadium have had to be protected with plastic sheeting as the rain continues to teem down.

The current weather reports for the next few hours are that the rain will continue to fall throughout the night, although it is expected to ease off for kick-off.

But the second half will kick off with an 82 per cent of heavy showers once again – meaning the game might not well see it out.

England are preparing for their third game in the Uefa Nations League against Spain, having lost against them in their competition opener.

And of course Gareth Southgate will be hoping for a more energetic display from his charges after the laboured 0-0 draw on Friday against Croatia.

It's not the first bit of trouble England fans might find themselves in – but at least this one doesn't concern the Spanish police.

SunSport reported how Spanish riot police were forced to intervene after rowdy England fans vandalised cars during a boozy night in Seville.

Footage showed noisy supporters kicking wing mirrors off vehicles parked in the street and aggressively circling drivers on the night before the Three Lions' clash with Spain.

It comes after British police pleaded with travelling fans to avoid a repeat of the last time England fans caused trouble in Spain.

One hooligan was filmed throwing a glass at a passing car in the centre of the Spanish city.

Riot police fired warning shots in the air as the situation threatened to spiral out of control, provoking a mini-stampede among some of the England supporters out in force last night ahead of today’s Nations League match.

There were no immediate reports of any arrests or serious injuries.

Around 3,000 fans have travelled to the southern Spanish city.
