Southgate might get pelters from some for being cautious, but nobody was complaining the minute the whistle blew on Wednesday.
The Three Lions haven't been much good at tournament football the last 50–odd years but appear to have finally settled on a successful formula.
It won't be pretty at times, but they get the job done.
Expect this game at Wembley to be more of a chess match than Italy's frantic game against Spain.
Noise will reign down from the terraces, but we're confident that this follows the usual rule for major finals – tense.
Back under 2.5 goals with confidence at 9/20, a bet which has won in five of England's six games so far.
