Root joins the Thunder with an international Twenty20 average of 35.77, including an unbeaten 90 runs against the West Indies earlier in the year.

"Everyone you speak to that has played in the Big Bash finds it a really interesting tournament and watching it you can see that," he said on Friday.

"You want to be involved in it and I'm really excited to get that opportunity with Sydney Thunder."

With the added addition of Root and Buttler to the roster, Thunder coach Shane Bond says his side will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

"Everybody knows Jos is one of the best T20 players in the world," the former New Zealand bowler said.

"Our fans want to see us put a squad together that can win the competition. We had a young team last year that is developing and when you put a couple of world-class players in the lineup it totally changes the look of the team ."

Root, who has never played in an overseas Twenty20 tournament, will make his Thunder debut against the Melbourne Stars on December 21.
