Emery reveals how Ramsey reacted to Arsenal contract snub

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has praised Aaron Ramsey for his reaction after being told he would not be offered a new deal.

Mirror Sport revealed in September that an offer of a new contract had been pulled with Ramsey’s current deal expiring at the end of the season.

He has been told he has no chance of persuading the Arsenal hierarchy to change their mind with his long association with the club coming to an end this summer.

Ramsey has been a substitute in Arsenal’s last two Premier League matches but played the full 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup success over Blackpool on Wednesday night.

And at full-time Gunners boss Emery reserved special praise for the Welshman’s professionalism.

"He is working well. He is focused with us, in training and in every match like today.

"The most important thing for me with Aaron is, I spoke with him last week, his spirit, his quality, his confidence.

"He played for 20 minutes against Crystal Palace and played with this spirit."

Goals from Stephan Lichtsteiner and Emile Smith-Rowe secured the win for Arsenal over Blackpool although there was a nervy finish after Matteo Guendouzi’s dismissal.

But Emery refused to criticise the young Frenchman who has impressed since his summer move from Lorient.

“That is football,” he said. “Perhaps it is down to experience but he is playing the way I want him to play.

“When you are playing on the pitch you can have positive things or negative things like an injury or a card. We have a lot of players looking to take responsibility so we will prepare with other players.”

Arsenal will face north London rivals Tottenham in the quarter-finals and Emery is relishing the occasion.

“We are for this title and we are going to play against the big teams and it will be a moment to play my first derby game, said Emery.
