TAMPA — DJ LeMahieu wants to keep being a part of it.
The Yankees’ most valuable player of 2019 has a contract taking him through this season. Yet the 31-year-old infielder said Wednesday morning that he’d be open to discussing an extension with Brian Cashman & company.
There have been no such conversations to date, LeMahieu said at George M. Steinbrenner Field, adding, “But obviously, I love it here.”
Signed to a two-year, $24 million deal in January 2019, LeMahieu posted a .327/.375/.518 slash line in his maiden Yankees voyage, setting a career high with 26 homers and leading the Yankees with 145 games played and 655 plate appearances. Nicknamed “The Machine,” he won over his teammates and his fans with his low-key approach to the game and life.
Asked if he exceeded even his own expectations last year, LeMahieu said, “I work really hard to have seasons like that and to impact teams like that. I never knew if it was possible to have that kind of impact, but I always strive for it. So I guess my goal this year is to stay within myself.”
